Michelle Pfeiffer’s Henry Rose Launches A New Fragrance Category That’s Perfect For Summer

The new Henry Rose Body Sprays

What does summer smell like? While everyone has a different answer to that question, we know what Michelle Pfeiffer’s response is, thanks to her new creations for Henry Rose, her line of transparent and genderless fine fragrances. For the first time in three years, Henry Rose is introducing an entirely new category. The addition of body sprays complements their collection of eau de parfums, body care and home fragrances.

“We created a collection of body sprays to round out our fragrance portfolio and give customers a new format to experience our brand,” Pfeiffer says. “They are a water-based, alcohol-free formula that will reach a broader demographic wanting a safer fine fragrance in a lighter, less concentrated format. We have always been very intentional about our product expansion, and body sprays are a natural next step for our brand.”

On a sticky summer day, spritzing on a heavy perfume doesn’t always feel enticing, but fragrance lovers still want a little something. That’s where the body sprays come in, and Pfeiffer wears them differently than her perfumes. “I love that our body sprays offer a completely new format and olfactive experience,” she says. “Some days, I want to enjoy a lighter fragrance, particularly in the warmer summer months, and our body sprays are perfect for more casual wear. I use them on days spent outdoors or at the beach, or even as a way to refresh after a workout. They are so easy to just throw in my bag and use throughout the day. I spray them liberally all over my body and clothes.”

Instead of reformulating existing scents into the body spray formula, Henry Rose created three new ones. “Since the scents of our body sprays are lighter, less concentrated and a faster-wearing experience, as they are meant to be sprayed more casually and liberally, and reapplied throughout the day as needed, we wanted to develop completely new scents that were better suited to this format and application,” Pfeiffer explains.

Like many Henry Rose scents, which are inspired by life experiences and memories, Pfeiffer looked to her recollections of growing up in Orange County, California. All three scents were formulated by IFF’s Perfumer, Pascal Gaurin. “Because we wanted these fragrances to feel lighter and more playful, their names are reflective of the carefree summers of my teenage years,” Pfeiffer says. “Blonde Barry is a blackberry-musk-infused scent, contrasted with mineral woods like driftwood and cedar. The sweetness of the blackcurrant and blackberries in this scent reminded me of a summer crush, who just so happened to be named Barry.”

For Mustang Sally, Pascal’s muse was the intoxicating scent of the famous orange orchards alongside the Mediterranean coast in Valencia, Spain. “The fresh citrus and airy musks in this scent reminded me of my summers and the smell of the fresh sea air and orange groves when driving around Orange County in my first car, a 1965 red Mustang,” Pfeiffer says. “The notes of Mustang Sally bring me back to a time in my life when I was so uninhibited and carefree. I’m instantly reminded of the joy and freedom I felt as a teen, driving around in my Mustang in the summer. Boys of Summer features lavandin, traditionally used as a masculine note, which is balanced with crisp magnolia and grounded with vetiver and orris to create a genderless fougere. It’s universally appealing, just like the boys of summer.”

The three new Body Spray scents are a natural extension of the existing portfolio of 11 fine fragrances. “As our fragrances layer nicely together, I love to combine the body sprays with our eau de parfums for a different experience,” Pfeiffer says. “One of my favorites is Boys of Summer Body Spray with our Windows Down Eau de Parfum—a perfect combination.”

In keeping with the Henry Rose ethos, the body sprays are EWG verified and Cradle to Cradle Certified, as well as non-aerosol and made from recyclable aluminum. The aluminum packaging is also great for on-the-go, since they can be tossed in a gym or overnight bag. “When I first started the journey to create Henry Rose, I knew that I wanted to create not only a safer and 100% transparent fine fragrance but also one that was sustainable,” Pfeiffer says. “This meant meeting the most rigorous sustainability measures throughout every step of the product’s journey, from the supply chain and ingredient sourcing to the manufacturing process and the packaging. Aluminum is a lightweight material that is easier and more energy efficient to recycle than glass, so it was an ideal format for our body sprays.”

Instead of alcohol, the body sprays are formulated with water as a base. “This allows the body sprays to be applied more liberally and reapplied throughout the day as often as needed, all over the body and even in the hair, without the scent becoming too overpowering,” Pfeiffer says. “Water is the ideal base for a body spray because it is refreshing and cooling to the skin, which works hand-in-hand with the light, refreshing scents we’ve created.”

Pfeiffer’s favorite part of helming Henry Rose has been the creative aspects, such as developing the scents, branding and imagery, and creative positioning. “But the most rewarding part, by far, has been people’s responses to the fragrances,” she says. “It was so important that I create products that matched the quality of other fine fragrances on the market, and I love when people discover our brand and fragrances first for the scents, before even realizing what we stand for.”
